Al-‘Ain al-Sokhna is a town in the Suez Governorate, positioned on the western shore of the Red Sea’s Gulf of Suez. It is 55 kilometers (34 miles) south of Suez and about 120 kilometers (75 miles) east of Cairo.
Recent archaeological excavations have revealed an ancient Egyptian port and settlement in this area. The site was first highlighted in 1999 by Professor Mahmud Abd El Raziq. Since then, French and Egyptian archaeologists have been exploring this area. It is comparable to the port of Mersa Gawasis further south, linking the mining regions of the Sinai with Memphis, approximately 120 km across the Eastern Desert, significant for turquoise and copper.
