- Memphis and Sakkara - Memphis (Arabic: مَنْف, romanized: Manf, pronounced [mænf]; Bohairic Coptic: ⲙⲉⲙϥⲓ; Greek: Μέμφις), also known as Men-nefer, was the ancient capital of Inebu-hedj, the first nome of Lower Egypt, referred to as mḥw (“North”).[3] The remnants of this historic city are found near the modern village of Mit Rahina (Arabic: ميت…
- Memphis and Sakkara - Memphis (Arabic: مَنْف, romanized: Manf, pronounced [mænf]; Bohairic Coptic: ⲙⲉⲙϥⲓ; Greek: Μέμφις), also known as Men-nefer, was the ancient capital of Inebu-hedj, the first nome of Lower Egypt, referred to as mḥw (“North”).[3] The remnants of this historic city are found near the modern village of Mit Rahina (Arabic: ميت رهينة), in the Badrashin district of Giza, Egypt.[4] The contemporary name likely originates from the late Ancient Egyptian name for Memphis, mjt-rhnt, meaning “Road of the Ram-Headed Sphinxes”.[5]
Together with the pyramid fields extending over a desert plateau for more than 30 kilometers (19 miles) to its west, including the renowned Pyramids of Giza, Memphis and its necropolis have been designated as a World Heritage Site.[6] The site is accessible to visitors as an open-air museum.
- Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids - Saqqara (Arabic: سقارة, Egyptian Arabic pronunciation: [sɑʔːɑːɾɑ]), also spelled Sakkara or Saccara in English /səˈkɑːrə/, is an Egyptian village in the Badrashin district of the Giza Governorate,[1] which houses ancient burial grounds of Egyptian royalty, serving as the necropolis for the ancient Egyptian capital, Memphis.[2] Saqqara is home to numerous pyramids, including the Pyramid of Djoser, often called the Step Tomb, and several mastaba tombs. Situated approximately 30 km (19 mi) south of modern Cairo, Saqqara spans an area of about 7 by 1.5 km (4.3 by 0.9 mi).
- Bent Pyramid - The Red Pyramid, also known as the North Pyramid, is the largest pyramid at the Dahshur necropolis in Cairo, Egypt. It is named for the rusty reddish color of its red limestone stones and is the third largest Egyptian pyramid, following those of Khufu and Khafre at Giza. It is considered Egypt’s first successful attempt at building a “true” smooth-sided pyramid. Locals call the Red Pyramid el-heram el-watwaat, meaning the Bat Pyramid.
Originally, the Red Pyramid was not red. It was covered with white Tura limestone, but only a few of these stones remain at the base, at the corner. During the Middle Ages, much of the white Tura limestone was removed for construction in Cairo, exposing the red limestone beneath.
- Pyramid of Teti - The pyramid of Teti is a smooth-sided pyramid located in the pyramid field at Saqqara in Egypt. It is the second known pyramid to contain pyramid texts.
- Pyramid of Unas - Unas constructed his pyramid between the complexes of Sekhemket and Djoser, in North Saqqara. A long causeway was built to connect the valley temple at a nearby lake to the pyramid site.
- Mastaba of Ti - The Mastaba of Ti is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Saqqara. It was discovered by Auguste Mariette.
The mastaba features two serdabs, and the tomb walls depict various scenes of daily life.
