- Al-Rifa’i Mosque - Al-Rifa’i Mosque (Arabic: مسجد الرفاعي, also transliterated as Al-Rifai, Al-Refai, Al-Refa’i, and locally known as El-Refa’i, or in English: the Refaai Mosque) is situated in Citadel Square, next to the Cairo Citadel. The mosque is named after Ali Abu Shubbak, who is interred there. It also serves as the royal mausoleum for Muhammad Ali’s family. The mosque is located opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, which dates back to around 1361. It was designed to complement the older structure as part of a 19th-century initiative by Egypt’s rulers to link themselves with the grandeur of earlier Islamic periods and modernize the city.

Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - Next, visit one of the largest mosques in Cairo, the Sultan Hassan Mosque, also known as
Madrasa El Sultan Hassan, founded by Sultan Hassan in 1356 A.D. The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is a grand Mamluk-era mosque and madrassa near The Citadel in Cairo. Construction began in 757 AH/1356 CE and concluded three years later “without even a single day of idleness.” At the time, the mosque was notable for its impressive size and innovative architectural features. Commissioned by a sultan with a brief and relatively unremarkable reign, al-Maqrizi noted the mosque contained several “wonders of construction.” It was designed to include schools for all four Sunni schools of thought: Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanafi, and Hanbali. - Al-Azhar Mosque - Continue to Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo, also known as the mosque of the most resplendent. This mosque in Islamic Cairo, Egypt, was commissioned by Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah of the Fatimid Caliphate for the newly established capital city in 970. Its name is believed to reference the Islamic prophet Muhammad’s daughter Fatimah, a revered figure in Islam, who was given the title az-Zahrā, meaning the shining or resplendent one. It was the first mosque established in Cairo, a city now known as “the City of a Thousand Minarets.”
- Al-Hussein Mosque - Conclude your day tour with a visit to El Hussein Mosque in Cairo. The al-Hussein Mosque, also known as the Mosque of al-Imam al-Husayn (Arabic: مسجد الإمام ٱلحُسين) and the Mosque of Sayyidna al-Husayn, is a mosque and mausoleum of Husayn ibn Ali, originally built in 1154 and later reconstructed in 1874. The mosque is located in Cairo, Egypt, near the Khan El-Khalili bazaar, close to the famous Al Azhar Mosque, in an area known as Al-Hussain. It is considered one of the holiest Islamic sites in Egypt. Some Shia Muslims believe that Husayn’s head (ra’s mubarak) is buried on the mosque grounds, where a mausoleum is now located, and it is regarded as a remnant of the Fatimid architecture in the building.
