It stands as one of Bulgaria’s largest and most important archaeological sites, featuring a palace complex, a sanctuary, and a fortress. Perperikon is believed to have been a political, economic, and religious hub in the ancient Thracian kingdom. During the medieval period, it was occupied by the Byzantine Empire and served as a military fortress for regional protection. The palace boasts impressive stone structures, including a large hall, a tower, and a courtyard. The sanctuary is thought to have been used for religious and mystical rituals during both the Thracian and medieval periods.
• Haskovo - Following the exploration of Perperikon, the journey continues north to the major city of Haskovo. Here, guests will enjoy lunch in the city center and admire the world’s tallest statue of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus, certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. The Virgin Mary is the traditional patron saint of Haskovo. The Church of the Holy Mother of God, built during the Bulgarian National Revival from 1832 to 1837, was the first cathedral constructed in modern Haskovo.
• Uzundzhovo - En route, there will be a visit to a fascinating medieval mosque that once served one of the largest trade fairs in the Ottoman Empire, located in Uzundzhovo. This mosque was converted into an Orthodox Christian church at the beginning of the 20th century. Part of the Caravanserai remains visible next to the church, making it a unique and worthwhile stop.
• Thracian Tomb of Alexandrovo - The final stop of the day is the Thracian Tomb of Alexandrovo, a masterpiece of ancient art. This well-preserved tomb, located near the village of Alexandrovo in Haskovo Province, Bulgaria, was discovered in 2000 and dates back to the Hellenistic period, around the 3rd or 2nd century BCE. Carved into rock, it consists of a central chamber and two side chambers. The tomb is renowned for its well-preserved frescoes and decorations, which are among the finest examples of Thracian art. These frescoes depict scenes of daily life and religious rituals, providing insight into the beliefs and customs of the ancient Thracians.
