- Atherton Tablelands - Departing from Cairns, the journey heads south, passing by Walsh’s Pyramid, one of the largest naturally formed pyramids globally. The guide will pause here for a photo opportunity of this distinctive North Queensland landmark.
Next, travel up the World Heritage-listed Gillies Highway, ascending 730 meters above sea level while taking in the stunning views over the Goldsborough Valley.
Just before reaching the top of the magnificent Gillies Range, there is a brief stop at Heales Lookout for photos before continuing into the beautiful Atherton Tablelands.
- Lake Barrine - Enjoy a peaceful morning stop at the picturesque Lake Barrine, filled with pure rainwater and encircled by World Heritage-listed rainforest rich with wildlife.
This is the first stop of the day and includes a delightful morning tea (Option B only). Lake Barrine is renowned for its award-winning ‘Devonshire Morning Tea’ featuring freshly baked scones with jam and cream, accompanied by locally brewed tea or coffee.
On most days, the lake’s banks reveal a variety of birds, including pelicans and ducks, as well as other animals such as tortoises, eels, water monitors, and various snake species like pythons, carpet snakes, and red-bellied black snakes basking on the shoreline.
- Curtain Fig National Park - After departing Lake Barrine, a short drive through charming country towns and farming areas leads to a unique natural wonder – the 600-year-old Curtain Fig Tree nestled in World Heritage Mabi rainforest. This is the world’s most visited tree, easily accessible via elevated boardwalks.
The surrounding rainforest is home to the elusive Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo, found only in Queensland. They can be spotted seasonally high in the trees.
- Millaa Millaa Falls - Visit the world-famous Millaa Millaa Falls, one of Australia’s most renowned and photographed waterfalls, surrounded by Mabi rainforest. This waterfall has featured in both television advertisements and movies.
The waterfall cascades over solid volcanic basalt rock formed thousands of years ago, creating a perfect drop for Millaa Millaa Creek to fall approximately 20 meters into a pool surrounded by rainforest.
- Innisfail - Enjoy a brief drive through this fascinating country town, showcasing many buildings from the Art Deco era.
- Paronella Park - In the cool afternoon, visit the remarkable Paronella Park’s Spanish-style castles in the rainforest. This includes a 30-minute tour expertly conducted by Paronella Park’s knowledgeable guides, who speak English, Chinese, and Japanese.
Paronella Park is a multi-award-winning tourist attraction with National Trust-listed heritage gardens and castle ruins, also featuring North Queensland’s first hydro-electric power plant, all built by Jose Paronella at Mena Creek Falls. Originally created in the 1930s by Jose Paronella, a visionary with a dream.
