- The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - Begin your full-day tour with a pickup from your hotel in Cairo or Giza by a tour guide to visit the Egyptian Museum. This museum is the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East and boasts the largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities worldwide. It showcases a vast array of artifacts from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman Era. The building’s architect was chosen through an international competition in 1895, the first of its kind, and was won by French architect Marcel Dourgnon. The museum was opened in 1902 by Khedive Abbas Helmy II and has become a historic landmark in downtown Cairo, housing some of the world’s most remarkable ancient masterpieces.
- Cairo Citadel - Visit the Citadel of Cairo, where you can explore the Alabaster Mosque of Mohamed Ali Pasha. The Citadel of Sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi (Saladin) is one of the most iconic monuments in Islamic Cairo and is among the most impressive medieval defensive fortresses. Its strategic location on the Muqattam Hills provided a strong defensive position and offers, as it still does today, an unrestricted panoramic view of Cairo. Sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi initiated the construction of a fortress over the Muqattam Hills in (572 AH/1176 AD), but it was completed during the reign of Sultan al-Kamel ibn al-Adel (604 AH/1207 AD), who made it the official residence of Egypt’s rulers. In the mid-nineteenth century, Khedive Ismail moved the official residence to Abdeen Palace in downtown Cairo.
- Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church - This church holds significant historical importance as the site where many patriarchs of the Coptic Church were elected. The first patriarch elected here was Patriarch Isaac (681-692). It serves as the episcopal church of Cairo and was the episcopal See of Masr (the district of Old Cairo), replacing the former See of Babylon. Many bishops of the See were consecrated in the church until the reign of Patriarch Christodulus.
- Church of St. Barbara - Saint Barbara is often depicted with miniature chains and a tower. As one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, she is a popular saint, known as the patron saint of armourers, artillerymen, military engineers, miners, and others who work with explosives due to her legend’s association with lightning. She is also the patron saint of mathematicians. A 15th-century French version of her story credits her with thirteen miracles, many of which reflect the protection she offered to ensure her devotees would not die before making confession and receiving extreme unction.
- Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) - The Hanging Church is named for its location above a gatehouse of Babylon Fortress, the Roman fortress in Coptic Cairo (Old Cairo); its nave is suspended over a passage. The church is accessed by twenty-nine steps; early travelers to Cairo called it “the Staircase Church.” The land surface has risen by about six meters since the Roman period, so the Roman tower is mostly buried below ground, reducing the visual impact of the church’s elevated position.
- Synagogue Ben Ezra - Ben Ezra is an ancient institution that has occupied at least three buildings throughout its history, undergoing many major and minor renovations. The current building dates back to the 1890s.
