• Cairo Citadel - Explore the largest Islamic monument in the Middle East, the Saladin Citadel or Cairo Citadel, which dates back to the 11th century. Built by the legendary warrior Saladin and his minister, the Citadel boasts 13 fortified towers and 7 mosques. It served as the seat of government and residence of rulers for over 700 years, offering a glimpse into Egypt’s modern history. Next, visit the Islamic marvel, the Mohammed Ali Mosque.
• Mosque of Muhammad Ali - Discover the Mosque of Mohammed Ali Basha, also known as the Alabaster Mosque. This Ottoman mosque features unique and towering minarets (86m high), with gold-plated domes and alabaster walls both inside and out. The mosque was completed in 1848 AD.
• Coptic Cairo - After a lunch break, continue your journey with your tour guide to Coptic Cairo, one of the most religiously significant areas. Coptic Cairo, part of Old Cairo, includes the Babylon Fortress, Hanging Church, Greek Church of St. George, Saints Sergius and Bacchus, and many other Coptic churches. According to Christian tradition, the Holy Family stayed at the site of the Saints Sergius and Bacchus Church to avoid the Roman army. Your guide will provide insights into Christianity in Egypt.
• Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) - Around Fort Babylon, some of the oldest churches of Egyptian Christians were constructed. This area, a pilgrimage destination for people of various faiths, contains Roman fortification ruins, and atop the Roman towers stands the historic Hanging Church.
• Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus - Continue the tour with a visit to the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus, also known as the Cavern Church. It is traditionally believed to be built on the site where the Holy Family—Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus—rested at the end of their journey into Egypt. Joseph may have worked at the fortress, making the Cavern Church one of the oldest churches worldwide. It holds significant historical importance and is where many patriarchs of the Coptic Church were elected.
• Synagogue Ben Ezra - The tour proceeds to the Ben Ezra Synagogue, located in the Fustat area of Old Cairo, Egypt. According to local legend, it is situated on the site where baby Moses was prayed for. This synagogue’s geniza, or storeroom, was discovered in the 19th century to contain a treasure trove of forgotten Hebrew, Aramaic, and Judeo-Arabic secular and sacred manuscripts.
