After breakfast, set off for the Giza Plateau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses some of Cairo’s most celebrated treasures. The tour begins with a visit to the three iconic pyramids: Cheops, Chephren, and Myrcerinus. Located on the West Bank of the River Nile, these ancient pyramids are the only remaining wonders of the Ancient World and are among the oldest tourist attractions globally. Originally constructed as royal tombs during Egypt’s Old and Middle Kingdom Periods, they contain a labyrinth of passageways designed to safeguard the Pharaohs’ mummies and the treasures they would carry into the afterlife.
- Great Sphinx - There will also be a chance to capture photos with the world-famous Sphinx, an impressive 50-meter tall statue featuring the body of a lion and the head of a human, carved from a single piece of rock.
- Khan Al-Khalili - Khan Al Khalili
The narrow lanes of Khan Al Khalili resemble a medieval-style marketplace. This collection of shops, many arranged around small courtyards, offers everything from soap powder to semi-precious stones, as well as novelty toy camels and alabaster pyramids. Most shops and stalls operate from around 9 am until well after sundown (except Friday morning and Sunday), although many souvenir vendors remain open as long as there are customers, even on Sunday.
Cairenes have conducted business here since the khan was established in the 14th century, and parts of the market, such as the gold district, remain the top choice for thousands of locals. The khan was once divided into distinct districts, but now the only clearly defined areas are the gold sellers, coppersmiths, and spice dealers. Aside from the occasional “Hey mister, look for free” touts, the merchants of Khan Al Khalili are some of the most persuasive you will ever encounter.
- The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - The Egyptian Museum in Cairo
Home to one of the world’s most significant collections of ancient artifacts, the Egyptian Museum is prominently located in Downtown Cairo, on the north side of Midan Tahrir. Within the grand domed, uniquely pinkish building, the dazzling treasures of Tutankhamun and other great pharaohs are displayed alongside the grave goods, mummies, jewelry, eating bowls, and toys of Egyptians whose names have been lost to history.
Exploring the museum is like embarking on a journey through time.
Some display cards have become outdated as new discoveries have challenged old theories. The collection quickly outgrew its original layout, as, for example, Tutankhamun’s vast trove and the tomb contents of Tanis were both discovered after the museum opened and had to be accommodated within the space. Now, more than 100,000 objects are packed into about 15,000 square meters. Like the country itself, the museum is evolving. Most objects remain on display.
