Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - Continue to one of Cairo’s largest mosques, the El Sultan Hassan Mosque, also known as
Madrasa El Sultan Hassan, founded by Sultan Hassan in 1356 A.D. This massive Mamluk-era mosque and madrassa, located near The Citadel, began construction in 757 AH/1356 CE and was completed in just three years. At the time, it was notable for its impressive size and innovative architectural features. Commissioned by a sultan of modest stature, al-Maqrizi noted the mosque’s “wonders of construction,” including schools for all four Sunni schools of thought: Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanafi, and Hanbali. - Al-Azhar Mosque - Proceed to Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo, also known as the mosque of the most resplendent. This mosque in Islamic Cairo, Egypt, was commissioned by Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah of the Fatimid Caliphate for the newly established capital city in 970. Its name is believed to reference the Islamic prophet Muhammad’s daughter Fatimah, a revered figure in Islam, known as az-Zahrā, meaning the shining or resplendent one. It was the first mosque established in Cairo, a city now nicknamed “the City of a Thousand Minarets.”
- El-Imam El-Hussein - Conclude your day tour with a visit to El Hussein Mosque in Cairo, a revered mosque believed to be the burial site of the head of the prophet Muhammad’s grandson.
