- قلعة صلاح الدين الأيوبي - The Citadel of Sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi (Saladin) stands as one of the most iconic landmarks in Islamic Cairo and is among the most remarkable defensive fortresses from the Middle Ages. Its strategic position on the Muqattam Hills provided a strong defensive advantage and continues to offer an unrestricted panoramic view of Cairo.
Sultan Salah al-Din al-Ayyubi initiated the construction of a fortress on the Muqattam Hills in (572 AH/ 1176 AD), although it was completed during the reign of Sultan al-Kamel ibn al-Adel (604 AH/1207 AD), who chose it as the official residence of Egypt’s rulers. In the mid-nineteenth century, Khedive Ismail relocated the official residence to Abdeen Palace in downtown Cairo.
- The Hanging Church - Also known as the Suspended Church or Al-Moallaqa, the Hanging Church is named for its construction atop the southern gate of the Roman Fortress. Palm tree logs and stone layers were used to build its foundation above the Roman fortress ruins. This unique church features a wooden roof shaped like Noah’s ark. From the 7th to the 13th century, it served as the residence of the Coptic Patriarch and hosted significant elections and religious ceremonies.
- Khan Al-Khalili - What is Khan el Khalili?
A visit to Cairo is incomplete without exploring Khan Al-Khalili. This bustling bazaar is vibrant, crowded, and full of life, offering a wide array of goods and shiny trinkets. While typical tourist souvenirs are available, the bazaar also offers genuinely fine shopping experiences.
