- Mosque of Muhammad Ali - The Muhammad Ali Mosque, also known as the Alabaster Mosque (Arabic: مسجد محمد علي), is located within the Citadel of Cairo, Egypt. It was commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha between 1830 and 1848.
Perched atop the citadel, this Ottoman mosque is the largest constructed in the first half of the 19th century. Its striking silhouette and twin minarets make it the most prominent mosque in Cairo.
The mosque was built to honor Tusun Pasha, Muhammad Ali’s youngest son, who passed away in 1816.
Together with the nearby Cairo Citadel, this mosque is a significant landmark and tourist attraction in Cairo.
- Al-Azhar Mosque - Al-Azhar Mosque (Arabic: الجامع الأزهر, romanized: al-Jāmiʿ al-ʾAzhar, lit. ’The Resplendent Congregational Mosque’, Egyptian Arabic: جامع الأزهر, romanized: Gāmiʿ el-ʾazhar), commonly referred to as al-Azhar in Egypt, is situated in Cairo’s historic Islamic district. Established as the new capital of the Fatimid Caliphate in 970, it was the first mosque in a city that later became known as “the City of a Thousand Minarets.” Its name is believed to be derived from az-Zahrāʾ (lit. ’the shining one’), a title for Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad.
Following its dedication in 972, and with the employment of 35 scholars by mosque authorities in 989, the mosque gradually evolved into its current form.

Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - Sultan al-Nasir Hasan (full name: An-Nasir Badr ad-Din Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Qalawun) ascended to the throne at 13 years old in 748 AH/1347 CE. Upon reaching maturity in 1350, he arrested Emir Manjaq, who had been controlling state affairs. Before this arrest, the emir was limited to an allowance of only one hundred dirham per day, collected by servants for the Sultan. This is particularly notable given that during that period, Emir Shaykhu reportedly had an income of 200,000 dirham per day. This deprivation might have spurred his later extravagance. Once in power, Sultan Hasan appointed his own favored individuals to positions of authority, displacing current dignitaries, which caused discontent. Dissatisfied Emirs arrested the Sultan in 1351, imprisoned him for three years, and elevated his brother as-Salih Salih to the throne. Hasan spent his imprisonment studying, and his obituaries reflect this.

Al-Rifa’i Mosque - Al-Rifa’i Mosque (Arabic: مسجد الرفاعي, also transliterated as Al-Rifai, Al-Refai, Al-Refa’i, locally known as El-Refa’i, and in English: the Refaai Mosque) is situated in Citadel Square, next to the Cairo Citadel. Its name comes from Ali Abu Shubbak, who is interred there. Today, it also serves as the royal mausoleum for Muhammad Ali’s family. The building stands opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, which dates back to around 1361, and was designed to complement the older structure as part of a grand initiative by 19th-century Egyptian rulers to align themselves with the perceived grandeur of earlier Islamic periods in Egypt’s history and to modernize the city.
