Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - The Sultan Hassan Mosque, also known as
Madrasa El Sultan Hassan, was established by Sultan Hassan in 1356 A.D. This grand Mamluk era mosque and madrassa is located near The Citadel in Cairo. Construction began in 757 AH/1356 CE and concluded three years later “without even a single day of idleness.” At the time, the mosque was celebrated for its impressive size and innovative architectural features. Commissioned by a sultan with a brief and modest reign, al-Maqrizi noted the mosque contained several “wonders of construction.” It was uniquely designed to house schools for all four Sunni schools of thought: Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanafi, and Hanbali. - Al-Azhar Mosque - Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo, also known as the mosque of the most resplendent, is a significant mosque in Islamic Cairo, Egypt. Commissioned by Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah of the Fatimid Caliphate for the newly established capital city in 970, its name is believed to honor the Islamic prophet Muhammad’s daughter Fatimah, a revered figure in Islam, who was given the title az-Zahrā, meaning the shining or resplendent one. It was the first mosque built in Cairo, a city now known as “the City of a Thousand Minarets.”
- Al-Hussein Mosque - The Al Hussein Mosque in Cairo is a revered site, believed to be the burial place of the head of the prophet Muhammad’s grandson.
