Continue your journey to the Ben Ezra Synagogue and Saint Simon’s Church, which is beautifully carved into the Mokattam Hills.
- Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) - A professional guide will pick you up and drive you through the narrow lanes of Old Cairo to reach the southern edges, where Coptic Cairo is situated. The Hanging Church of the Virgin Mary, perched atop the water gate, dates back to the 7th century. It boasts stunning dark interiors with cedar paneling, a wooden ark ceiling, and a marble pulpit supported by 12 pillars.
- Church of St. Barbara - The Church of St. Barbara is one of Old Cairo’s historically significant churches. Initially dedicated to St. Cyrus and St. John, who were revered for their healing abilities, a small church in the building’s northeastern corner honors these two martyrs.
- Coptic Orthodox Church of St. George (Mari Girgis) - The Church of St. George is a Greek Orthodox church located within the Babylon Fortress in Coptic Cairo. It is part of the Holy Patriarchal Monastery of St. George under the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and all Africa. The church’s origins date back to the 10th century (or earlier), with the current structure rebuilt after a 1904 fire, completed in 1909. Since 2009, the monastery’s hegumen has held the rank of bishop with the title Bishop Babylonos.
- Synagogue Ben Ezra - Originally a Coptic church, it was converted into a Jewish synagogue in the 11th century. According to Jewish tradition, this is where the prophet Jeremiah preached in the 11th century, while Copts believe it is the site where baby Moses was discovered in a basket.
- Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus - This church is believed to be where the Holy Family rested during their exile in Egypt. In the Chapel of the convent, visitors seeking blessings can be wrapped in chains by the nuns.
- Cave Church - The Monastery of Saint Simon, also known as the Cave Church, is situated in the Mokattam mountain in southeastern Cairo. Seven churches and chapels are nestled within a series of caves inside the Monastery; the Virgin Mary and St. Simon Cathedral is the largest church. Inside the expansive caverns, beautiful engravings adorn the walls, each depicting stories from the Bible. St. Simon’s Hall, a large seating arena accommodating 2,000 people for spiritual gatherings, is located on the upper level.
The Monastery also features an education center, a children’s area, and a school for the deaf. Now recognized as one of the largest Coptic monasteries in Egypt, the magnificence of the churches hidden within the heart of the Mokattam Hills belies their relatively recent construction.
