- Al-Azhar Mosque - Al-Azhar Mosque, romanized as al-Jāmiʿ al-ʾAzhar, meaning ‘The Resplendent Congregational Mosque’, is commonly referred to in Egypt as al-Azhar. This Egyptian mosque, located in Islamic Cairo, was commissioned by Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah of the Fatimid dynasty for the newly established capital city in 970. Its name is believed to be derived from az-Zahrāʾ, meaning “the shining one”, a title given to Fatimah. It was the first mosque built in Cairo.
- Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is a grand mosque and madrassa situated in Cairo’s historic district. Constructed between 1356 and 1363 during the Bahri Mamluk period, it was commissioned by Sultan an-Nasir Hasan. The mosque is renowned for its vast size and innovative architectural features, and remains one of Cairo’s most impressive historic monuments.
- Cairo Citadel - The Citadel of Cairo, also known as the Citadel of Saladin, is a medieval Islamic-era fortress in Cairo, Egypt, built by Salah ad-Din (Saladin) and further developed by later Egyptian rulers. It served as Egypt’s government seat and the residence of its rulers for nearly 700 years, from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Positioned on a promontory of the Mokattam hills near central Cairo, it offers a strategic view over the city and dominates its skyline. At the time of its construction, it was one of the most impressive and ambitious military fortification projects. Today, it is a preserved historic site, featuring mosques and museums.
- Mosque of Amr Ibn Al-As - The Mosque of Amr ibn al-As (Arabic: جامع عمرو بن العاص), also known as the Mosque of Amr, was originally constructed in 641–642 AD as the center of Egypt’s newly founded capital, Fustat. It was the first mosque built in Egypt and all of Africa. By the twentieth century, it was the fourth largest mosque in the Islamic world.
The mosque’s location was the site of the tent of the Muslim army’s commander, General Amr ibn al-As. One corner of the mosque houses the tomb of his son, ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘As. Due to extensive reconstruction over the centuries, none of the original building remains, but the rebuilt mosque is a prominent landmark in what is now known as Old Cairo. It is an active mosque with a dedicated congregation, and when prayers are not in session, it is open to visitors and tourists.
- Mosque of Muhammad Ali - The Mohamed Ali Mosque, considered one of Cairo’s most beautiful mosques, is also known as the Alabaster Mosque due to its outer walls being covered in Alabaster Stone.
- Al Rifai Mosque - Followed by another significant mosque, Al-Rifa’i Mosque, located opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, which dates back to around 1361. Architecturally designed to complement the older structure, it was part of a vast campaign by Egypt’s 19th-century rulers to associate themselves with the perceived glory of earlier periods in Egypt’s Islamic history and to modernize the city.
