- Mosque of Muhammad Ali - The Muhammad Ali Mosque, also known as the Alabaster Mosque, is located within the Citadel of Cairo, Egypt. It was commissioned by Muhammad Ali Pasha between 1830 and 1848.
Perched atop the citadel, this Ottoman mosque is the largest constructed in the first half of the 19th century. Its dynamic silhouette and twin minarets make it the most prominent mosque in Cairo.
The mosque was erected in memory of Tusun Pasha, Muhammad Ali’s youngest son, who passed away in 1816.
This mosque, along with the nearby Cairo Citadel, is a significant landmark and tourist attraction in Cairo.
- Al-Azhar Mosque - Al-Azhar Mosque, romanized as al-Jāmiʿ al-ʾAzhar, meaning ‘The Resplendent Congregational Mosque’, is known in Egypt simply as al-Azhar. It is situated in Cairo, Egypt, within the historic Islamic heart of the city. Established as the new capital of the Fatimid Caliphate in 970, it was the first mosque in a city that later became known as “the City of a Thousand Minarets”. Its name is believed to be derived from az-Zahrāʾ, meaning ‘the shining one’, a title for Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad.
After its dedication in 972, and with the employment of 35 scholars by mosque authorities in 989, the mosque gradually evolved into its current form.
- Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hasan is a grand mosque and madrasa located in Salah al-Din Square in Cairo’s historic district, Egypt. Constructed between 1356 and 1363 during the Bahri Mamluk period, it was commissioned by Sultan an-Nasir Hasan. The mosque is renowned for its vast size and innovative architectural features, and remains one of Cairo’s most impressive historic monuments.
Sultan al-Nasir Hasan (full name: An-Nasir Badr ad-Din Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Qalawun) ascended the throne at 13 in 748 AH/1347 CE. Upon reaching maturity in 1350, he detained the Emir Manjaq, who had controlled state affairs. Before this, the emir was limited to an allowance of only one hundred dirham per day, collected by servants for the Sultan. This is particularly notable given that during that era, the emir Shaykhu was believed to have an income of 200,000 dirham per day.
- Al-Rifa’i Mosque - Al-Rifa’i Mosque, also transliterated as Al-Rifai, Al-Refai, Al-Refa’i, and locally known as El-Refa’i, is referred to in English as the Refaai Mosque. It is situated in Citadel Square, next to the Cairo Citadel. The mosque’s name is derived from Ali Abu Shubbak, who is interred there. It now serves as the royal mausoleum for Muhammad Ali’s family. The building stands opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, dating from around 1361, and was designed to complement the older structure as part of a 19th-century campaign by Egypt’s rulers to associate themselves with the perceived grandeur of earlier Islamic periods and modernize the city.
The original structure on the site was a small 12th-century Fatimid-era mosque, known as the Al-Dakhirah Mosque. Later, the grandson of Ahmad al-Rifa’i, Ali Abu Shubbak al-Rifa’i, was buried there, and the site was transformed into a Zawiya for the Rifa’i tariqah.
