- Islamic Cairo - Situated in the heart of central Cairo, Islamic Cairo encompasses the ancient walled city and the Citadel of Cairo, offering a district rich in historical significance. This area is adorned with a variety of historic treasures, including numerous mosques, tombs, madrasas, luxurious mansions, caravanserais, and impressive fortifications from the Islamic era. Recognizing its importance, UNESCO designated Islamic Cairo as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1979. It is celebrated as one of the oldest Islamic cities worldwide, featuring famous mosques, madrasas, hammams, and fountains, and serving as a center of Islamic culture during its peak in the 14th century.
- Sharia Al Mu’izz Li-Din Allah - Muizz Street, also known as Al Moez Ldin Allah Al Fatimi Street, is a historic thoroughfare located in the heart of Islamic Cairo, Egypt. Stretching approximately one kilometer, this street is home to an exceptional collection of medieval architectural marvels within the Islamic world. It is named after Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah, the fourth caliph of the Fatimid dynasty. Extending from Bab Al-Futuh in the north to Bab Zuweila in the south, Muizz Street underwent significant restoration beginning in 1997, aiming to transform it into an “open-air museum.” On April 24, 2008, Al-Muizz Street was officially designated. The northern section of the street runs from the Al-Hakim Mosque to the Spice Market at Al-Azhar Street, featuring treasures like the Al-Aqmar Mosque, the Qalawun complex, and well-preserved medieval mansions and palaces.
The southern part stretches from the Ghuriya complex to Bab Zuweila and includes the vibrant Tent Market in the Gamaliya district.
- Bab al-Futuh - Bab al Futuh, also known as the Conquest Gate, is one of the three remaining gates within the walls of Old Cairo, Egypt. Completed in 1087, it faces north and marks the northern end of Muizz Street. The other two gates are Bab al-Nasr (Victory Gate) to the north and Bab Zuwayla (Gate of Zuwayla) to the south.
The gate is an integral part of the fortified complex built by Commander/Vizier Badr al-Jamali during the reign of Fatimid Imam/caliph Mustansir. Featuring rounded towers that provided better defense than the square towers of Bab al-Nasr, it included defensive features like shafts for pouring boiling substances or fiery oil on attackers, as well as arrow slits. The gate’s decorations are characterized by intricate vegetal and geometric designs.
- Wekalet El Ghoury - The Sultan Al-Ghuri Complex, constructed between 1503 and 1505, stands as a magnificent example of Islamic architecture. This expansive complex, located in the Fahhamin Quarter along al Mu’izz li-Din Allah Street in Cairo, Egypt, includes a khanqah, mausoleum, sebil-kuttab, mosque, and madrasa. Spanning both sides of al Mu’izz li-Din Allah Street, the congregational mosque-madrasa is on the western side, while the khanqah-mausoleum-sabil-kuttab is on the eastern side.
- Bab Zuweila - Bab Zuweila, a remnant of the ancient walls of Cairo, stands as a testament to the city’s history. Known as Bawabbat al-Mitwali during the Ottoman period, it is also spelled Bab Zuwayla. This gate, the last remaining southern gate from the 11th and 12th-century walls of Fatimid Cairo, is a significant landmark. Its name comes from “Bab,” meaning “Door,” and “Zuwayla,” a Berber warrior tribe from the Western Desert responsible for its protection.
- Khan Al-Khalili - Khan El-Khalili, a lively souk in the heart of historic Islamic Cairo, is a prominent bazaar district. Attracting both tourists and locals, this area is a bustling center of activity, offering a wide range of goods and an engaging cultural experience.
