Experience a visit to the world’s oldest Thermal Hospital, which has been in continuous operation for over five centuries.
Before the advent of modern SPAs, Queen D. Leonor of Portugal had her own exclusive “Pool,” which you will have the opportunity to explore. Inspired by observing people seeking healing in natural hot springs, the Queen commissioned the construction of a thermal hospital on the site in 1485.
The tour also includes a visit to the nearby Church of Nossa Senhora do Pópulo (“Our Lady of the People”), a small yet artistically significant place of worship. It features some of the earliest examples of “Manueline Architecture,” a distinctive Portuguese architectural style.
Following this, the tour will take you to the picturesque and romantic D. Carlos I Park, where you will learn about the city’s history, particularly its golden era in the 19th century when it emerged as an industrial and artistic center, with figures like Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro and José Malhoa becoming renowned names.
