Beng Mealea Temple, located in an ancient Angkor city and known as the Temple of Lotus Pond, is a significant structure from the Angkor Wat period, situated roughly 77 km from Siem Reap by road. Built in the early 12th century under King Suriyavaraman II during the Khmer Empire, this temple was originally a Hindu place of worship dedicated to Vishnu. Recognizing its cultural significance, Beng Mealea Temple was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on March 27, 2020.

Koh Ker Temple - Koh Ker is a notable yet remote archaeological site in northern Cambodia, about 120 kilometers from Siem Reap and the famous Angkor complex. This area, characterized by dense jungle and low population density, includes over 180 sanctuaries within a protected region spanning 81 square kilometers. However, only around two dozen of these monuments are accessible to tourists.

The name “Koh Ker” is the modern designation for a prominent city from the Khmer Empire period. Historical inscriptions refer to this city as Lingapura (meaning “city of lingams”), Chok Gargyar (“city of glance”), or as the “iron tree forest.”

It is unique among Khmer temples due to its elongated north-south axis, differing from the typical rectangular orientation toward the east. The temple lends its name to Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province and is near the Khao Phra Wihan National Park in Thailand’s Sisaket province, although access from Thailand is no longer allowed.

The construction of the initial temple on this site began in the early 9th century. It was dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva, particularly in his forms as the mountain gods Sikharesvara and Bhadresvara.
