- Beng Mealea - Explore the fascinating Beng Mealea temple, a remarkable site outside the Angkor area, built in the 11th century by King Suryavarman II. This temple served as a prototype for the renowned Angkor Wat. Nestled in the jungle, Beng Mealea offers an adventurous journey to reach it. It was secluded during Cambodia’s civil war. As the largest temple outside the main Angkor complex, it remains largely intact in some areas, while others are in ruins, with tree roots entwining the temple walls and doorways. The atmosphere is haunting yet provides a refreshing contrast to the more frequented temples near Angkor Wat. Beng Mealea shares many features with Angkor Wat, albeit on a smaller scale, including three encircling galleries, four gates and entrances, and two interior libraries. Unlike Angkor Wat, it has a single central tower instead of five.
- Ancient Quarry - Visit the site where the Khmer people quarried stone for Angkor Wat. Here, hundreds of stone pieces remain from the 12th century. A tour guide will explain the stone-cutting techniques and how the ancient people transported them to construct Angkor Wat.
- Royal Independence Gardens - The Royal Garden is a favorite among both domestic and international tourists. To the north lies the largest colonial-style hotel, Raffles Grand d’Angkor Hotel, built during the French occupation alongside the Royal Garden. To the south is the Royal Residence, located along the riverbank.
- Preah Ang Chek Preah Ang Chom Temple - This religious shrine is situated within the Royal Residence compound, where two statues, Preah Ang Chek and Preah Ang Chom, have been venerated since 1982. These bronze statues were rediscovered in 1950 in the forest around Angkor Thom by conservation officials. It is believed they were originally housed in Angkor Wat. According to the Institute of the Humanities and Social Sciences of the Royal Academy of Cambodia, Khmer King Ang Chan I, who reigned in the 16th century, allowed the installation of these statues in Angkor Wat to honor the princesses, considered bodhisattvas. The statues were lost as Angkor Wat fell into neglect.
- Wat Preah Prom Rath - Visit Prom Rath Pagoda, a historic Buddhist temple complex with vibrant pagodas set in spacious gardens. It is the oldest Buddhist monastery in the town. A guide will share insights into Cambodia’s dominant religion. The local guide will also introduce you to the town’s best street food spots, where you can meet local chefs and learn about Cambodian cuisine. Sample authentic Cambodian snacks like ice cakes, roasted frogs, fried crickets, fried grasshoppers, various roasted Tonle Sap freshwater fish, barbecued meat skewers, Khmer fried chicken, duck eggs, and barbecued corn. As you explore, you might encounter fried spiders or roasted snakes, along with a variety of local seasoned fruits.
- Psar Chaa - Old Market - This market is a tourist favorite, offering souvenirs such as T-shirts, silverware, silk, wood and stone carvings, Buddhas, and more. It is also known for its diverse Cambodian cuisine, with food stalls selling various rices, dried fish, pork sausages, vegetables, fruits, and the fermented fish paste prahok. Some stalls offer baguettes and stuffed grilled frogs, while others serve different Khmer soups.
- Artisans Angkor - Artisans Angkor is a Cambodian social enterprise founded in 1992 to provide employment for rural youth while preserving traditional Khmer crafts, including stone and wood carving, lacquering, silver plating, and silk weaving.
