A Journey Through Canberra’s Craft Beverages

As a passionate advocate for sustainable travel, I am always on the lookout for experiences that allow me to explore local culture while supporting eco-friendly practices. When I heard about the Canberra Full-Day Tour that promised a day of exploring local breweries, wineries, and distilleries, I knew it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. The tour not only offered a chance to taste some of Canberra’s finest craft beverages but also provided insights into the sustainable practices employed by these local producers.

Our day began at the Visitor’s Center, where we were greeted by a friendly guide and a comfortable, air-conditioned van. The small group size, consisting of just seven of us, including three charming sisters from New Zealand, made for an intimate and engaging experience. As we set off on our journey, the scenic drive through Canberra’s countryside was a reminder of the natural beauty that this region has to offer.

Discovering the Art of Winemaking

Our first stop was Dog Trap Winery, a quaint establishment nestled amidst rolling hills. Here, we were welcomed by Dennis, the owner, who shared his passion for winemaking and the innovative methods he employs to protect his grapes from local wildlife. It was fascinating to learn about the challenges and triumphs of sustainable viticulture, and Dennis’s dedication to preserving the environment was truly inspiring.

We had the pleasure of tasting nine different red wines, including some exclusive, unreleased varieties. Each wine had its own unique character, and the mulled wine was a particular standout. The experience was not only about tasting but also about understanding the intricate process behind each bottle. It was heartening to see how local producers like Dennis are committed to maintaining the ecological balance while crafting exceptional wines.

Spirits and Brews: A Taste of Innovation

Our journey continued to Shaw Winery, a more modern facility where we sampled five exquisite white wines. The sparkling rosé was a delightful surprise, and the accompanying cheese and crackers added a touch of elegance to the tasting. The staff at Shaw Winery were knowledgeable and eager to share their insights into the winemaking process, further deepening our appreciation for the craft.

Next, we ventured to Ambrosia Distillery, where we were introduced to a range of unique spirits. Andrew, the distiller, walked us through his innovative techniques, blending traditional methods with modern science to create high-quality gins and vodkas. The tasting was an adventure in itself, with each spirit offering a distinct flavor profile. It was a testament to the creativity and expertise of local artisans who are pushing the boundaries of craft distilling.

Our final stop was Capitol Brewery, where we had the option to sample a selection of beers or wines. Although I was nearing my limit, the beers I tasted were exceptional, showcasing the skill and passion of Canberra’s brewers. While there wasn’t a formal tour, the opportunity to see the brewing equipment up close added to the experience.

A Day Well Spent

As the day came to a close, we were dropped off at our respective accommodations, reflecting on the memorable experiences we had shared. The tour was not only a celebration of Canberra’s vibrant craft beverage scene but also a testament to the importance of supporting local producers who prioritize sustainability.

For those who, like me, are passionate about eco-friendly travel and eager to explore the rich tapestry of flavors that Canberra has to offer, this tour is a must. It provides a unique opportunity to connect with local artisans, learn about their sustainable practices, and indulge in some of the finest beverages the region has to offer. Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or a curious traveler, the Canberra Full-Day Tour promises an unforgettable journey through the heart of Canberra’s craft beverage industry.
