- Johnston Canyon - Johnston Creek begins north of Castle Mountain in a glacial valley southwest of Badger Pass. The creek travels through a gorge known as Johnston Canyon. As it nears the Bow River, the creek flows through a large canyon sculpted by erosion over millennia. The creek has carved through limestone rock, creating steep canyon walls, waterfalls, tunnels, and pools.
- Castle Mountain - Castle Mountain is situated within Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies, roughly midway between Banff and Lake Louise. Named in 1858 by James Hector for its castle-like appearance, it is a notable landmark.
- Lake Louise - Lake Louise is a glacial lake located in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and wife of the Marquess of Lorne, the Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883, the lake is renowned for its turquoise waters. This color is due to rock flour carried into the lake by meltwater from the glaciers above. The lake covers an area of 0.8 km² and drains through the 3 km long Louise Creek into the Bow River.
- Moraine Lake - Moraine Lake is a breathtaking glacially-fed lake in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, within Banff National Park, celebrated for its vibrant turquoise-blue waters.
- Lake Louise Visitor Information Centre - The village of Lake Louise, at an elevation of 1,661 m, is the highest mini town. Visitors can enjoy lunch, explore the shops, and visit the center around the mini square, recharging for the next two lakes on the tour.
- Crowfoot Glacier - Named by early explorers for its three ice sections resembling a crow’s foot, the Crowfoot Glacier remains spectacular despite one “toe” having receded.
The glacier, located above Bow Lake, offers stunning photo opportunities for those traveling the Icefields Parkway.
The magnificent Crowfoot Glacier can be seen from a lookout on the renowned Icefields Parkway, about 34 km (21 mi) north of Lake Louise. Attached to the northeastern side of Crowfoot Mountain, overlooking Bow Lake, the glacier’s runoff feeds into the Bow River, which flows from Banff National Park through Calgary to the Alberta prairies.
- Peyto Lake - Peyto Lake is a glacier-fed lake in Banff National Park, Canadian Rockies, near the Icefields Parkway. Named after Bill Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper, the lake is nestled in a valley of the Waputik Range, between Caldron Peak, Peyto Peak, and Mount Jimmy Simpson, at an elevation of 1,860 m (6,100 ft). In summer, glacial rock flour flows into the lake, giving it a unique bright turquoise color. This vibrant hue makes it a popular subject for illustrated books, and the area is a favored sightseeing spot. The lake is best viewed from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefields Parkway. Fed by Peyto Creek, which drains Caldron Lake and Peyto Glacier (part of the Wapta Icefield), Peyto Lake is the source of the Mistaya River, flowing northwest from the lake’s outflow.
-
Herbert Lake - Herbert Lake offers stunning views of the lake and snow-capped mountains. A less-traveled trail with excellent mountain views begins at the Herbert Lake parking area. The trailhead can be tricky to locate, so downloading offline maps is recommended to stay on course.
The trail is well-defined and easy to follow once past the trailhead.
There are some minor elevation changes, but nothing too challenging. The trail provides multiple viewpoints of the lake and runs alongside it for most of the route.
- Bow Lake - Bow Lake is one of the many lakes along the Icefields Parkway and a popular stop for visitors to Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. The Canadian Rockies are renowned for their stunning vistas and lakes, and Bow Lake is a top recommendation for a stop to stretch your legs on the Icefields Parkway.
A short walk along the lakeshore trail offers a family-friendly hike, or longer hikes around Bow Lake provide a more complete day. Whatever the choice, Bow Lake is not to be missed.
