A Journey Through Time and Nature

As a retired teacher with a penchant for road trips, I have always been drawn to the open road and the stories it holds. My recent adventure in Cao Bằng, Vietnam, was no exception. The allure of the Cao Bang Highlights tour was irresistible, promising a day filled with natural wonders and cultural encounters. It was a chance to explore the unique mountain scenery and authentic cultural hotspots of Cao Bằng on two wheels, a mode of travel that has always resonated with me.

The day began with a sense of anticipation as we were picked up at our hotel by our guides, Quan and Tai. Their warm smiles and genuine hospitality set the tone for the day. As we finalized our motorbike gear, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the road trips of my youth, when my family and I would set out on adventures across the American Midwest. The winding roads of Cao Bằng, with their breathtaking views of rice paddies and limestone karsts, reminded me of the scenic routes I had once traveled.

Our first stop was the Phia Thap incense village, where we witnessed the daily life of the Nung ethnic villagers. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the Ban Gioc Waterfall, the fourth largest transnational waterfall in the world. As we approached the falls, the sound of rushing water grew louder, and the sight that greeted us was nothing short of spectacular. The waterfall, shared by Vietnam and China, was a testament to the power and beauty of nature. Standing there, I was reminded of the awe-inspiring natural wonders I had encountered on my travels across America.

We took a raft to get closer to the falls, and the experience was exhilarating. After our visit to the falls, we made a quick stop at the Truc Lam Buddhist temple. The view of the valley and the waterfall from the temple was breathtaking, offering a moment of reflection and peace. It was a reminder of the spiritual journeys I have taken in my travels, seeking out places of tranquility and contemplation.

Discovering Hidden Gems

Our adventure continued with a visit to the Nguom Ngao Cave, also known as the Tiger Cave. The cave’s limestone chambers and strangely shaped stalactites were a sight to behold, each formation telling a story of time and nature. As we explored the cave, I was reminded of the hidden treasures I have discovered on my road trips, the places that hold secrets waiting to be uncovered.

The final leg of our journey took us to Mount Angel Eye, a mountain with a through-going hole that offered a unique perspective of the landscape. The view from the mountain was a fitting end to our day, a reminder of the wide-open spaces that have always called to me.

As we returned to Cao Bằng city, I reflected on the day’s experiences.
