• Citadel Fort Adelaide - Situated on a hill in Port Louis, Mauritius, La Citadelle de Port Louis, or Fort Adelaide, overlooks the capital. This fortress, with its black stone walls, dates back to 1830 and was built under British rule by Sir Charles Colville. Fort Adelaide was constructed to defend Port Louis from invasions and manage local uprisings amid racial tensions. Completed in 1840 and named after Adelaide, wife of King William IV, it remains intact, unlike many British-era forts. It symbolizes the end of slavery and the beginning of Indian immigration, built by a diverse labor force.
