You will be picked up from your accommodation in Cape Town as we embark on a 3-hour drive. We’ll connect to the National Highway, which traverses three provinces in South Africa: The Western Cape, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal Province. This is the busiest highway in Cape Town, as it facilitates daily commutes to the city center for work.
Heading east out of Cape Town, we will pass Khayelitsha, a township whose name means ‘our new home’ in Xhosa. It is the largest township in Cape Town, with a population of half a million. Many residents work in the city and rely on public transport daily. Khayelitsha has its own thriving economy, which has grown significantly over the years. Some residents also work in the nearby Cape Winelands region.
Next, we will pass Somerset West and drive through Sir Lowry’s Pass, named after Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole, a Governor of the Cape in 1828. We will then pass the Steenbras Dam, one of the water supply sources for the province.
Continuing on the National Highway, we will pass through the Elgin Valley, the birthplace of Appletizer, created in 1966 by blending fruit juice with carbonated water. As we proceed, we will pass Hermanus, known as the Bread Basket of South Africa due to its warm climate and humid winters, ideal for wheat cultivation.
We will then pass through Caledon, a small town primarily focused on agriculture, including grain production and some stock farming. Next, we will pass Bredasdorp in the Overberg region, the main economic and service hub, making it a bustling and vibrant town.
Our final stop is Cape Agulhas, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet.
On our return journey, we will drive through the charming town of Elim, established in 1824 by German missionaries as a Moravian Mission station. This small town is characterized by white fishermen’s cottages and has approximately 2,000 inhabitants.
We will also visit Gansbaai, a small fishing town known for the Great White Shark, located in the Overberg region with a population of 15,000 people.
Hermanus, the capital for whale watching, is where southern right whales visit our coast. Historically, they were considered the ‘right’ whales to catch, hence the name Southern Right Whales. These whales are known for approaching the shore or boats without fear. Hermanus is a charming town with a population of 50,000, surrounded by ocean and mountains. Fishing is popular here, making it an ideal stop for fresh seafood. We can also stop for whale watching in Hermanus, with the whale season running from July to November.
