This is one of Cape Town’s oldest neighborhoods, previously known as the Malay Quarter, named after the Malay-speaking people brought to Cape Town by the Dutch as slaves. Beyond its colorful houses, Bo-Kaap offers much more than meets the eye. Visitors can stroll with guides, take photos, and learn about Bo-Kaap’s history, current culture, and unique cuisine.
- Bantry Bay - Nestled at the base of Lion’s Head mountain, Bantry Bay is one of Africa’s most luxurious suburbs. Environmental studies have shown that this mountainside suburb is wind-free. Thanks to Lion’s Head, the beautiful mountain shields this suburb from Cape Town’s southeastern winds, providing Bantry Bay with over 250 wind-free days a year, a remarkable achievement given Cape Town’s windy climate.
- Clifton - Clifton boasts the most expensive villas in all of Africa. Besides its status as a millionaire’s village, Clifton also features some of the best public beaches near Cape Town, including the four Clifton beaches.
- Camps Bay Beach - Just 15 minutes outside Cape Town’s famous city bowl and on the Atlantic seaboard is the Camps Bay suburb. Known as the Beverly Hills of Cape Town, few places in the world offer views like those seen here. Visitors will have the chance to stop at Maiden’s Cove, a coastal stopover area offering some of the best views of this suburb and its namesake, Camps Bay Beach.
- Twelve Apostles - The Twelve Apostles are part of the Cape Peninsula mountain range, featuring 12 distinct headlands. Guides will provide fascinating information about this famous mountain range and allow time for photos before continuing the journey to Hout Bay.
- Hout Bay - From Camps Bay, the tour proceeds via Victoria Road, past Bakoven suburb to Hout Bay town. Known for its thriving fishing community, guides will show the harbor where fishing activities take place. Visitors can opt for a 40-minute scenic boat trip to an island inhabited by over 5,000 Cape fur seals. If not keen on the boat trip, visitors can explore the craft market or take a 10-minute walk to Hout Bay Beach. Please note that the Seal Island trip is optional and the boat is available subject to favorable weather conditions.
- Duiker Island - While in Hout Bay and at Hout Bay Harbour, there is an option to take a scenic 40-minute round trip to Duiker Island, home to over 5,000 Cape fur seals. Other options include a 7-minute walk to Hout Bay Beach or shopping at the Hout Bay craft market.
- Chapman’s Peak Drive - From Hout Bay Harbour, the tour continues towards the world-famous Chapman’s Peak Drive. Carved out of the Chapman’s Peak mountains between 1915 and 1925 to connect Hout Bay with the southern peninsula towns, it is an engineering marvel. Locally known as “Chapies,” the 9km long Chapman’s Peak Drive winds along the steep Chapman’s Peak mountains that dramatically drop into the Atlantic Ocean like an ice sheet. With about 152 curves, each offers a unique view. Various viewpoints provide opportunities to stop, soak in the beauty, and take photos.
- Noordhoek Farm Village - Situated at the southern end of Chapman’s Peak Drive and in the heart of the lush retirement village of Noordhoek, the Noordhoek Farm Village is home to the Village Roast, a coffee shop boasting the best roasted coffee in the area. In addition to coffee, there are raw juices of different flavors and small shops selling locally made crafts and other bric-a-brac.
- Cape Point Ostrich Farm - Just before entering the Cape of Good Hope National Park, there is an opportunity to drive past an ostrich farm, where a quick stop can be made to photograph Africa’s largest flightless bird.
- Cape Point Nature Reserve - Cape Point Nature Reserve is a 7,700-hectare park and part of the Cape Floral Kingdom. With over 8,000 different plant species, 70% of which are endemic, it is the world’s richest floral kingdom and an extraordinary biodiversity hotspot. Cape Point National Park is also home to the Cape Point Lighthouse and the Cape of Good Hope. Visitors may also encounter wildlife here.
- Cape of Good Hope - Known for its rough waters, rugged coastline, abundant wildlife, and a long history of both tragedy and triumph, the Cape of Good Hope is a major tourist attraction. Although it is only the most southwestern point of Africa, early sailors famously referred to it as the “corner of Africa” due to its excellent navigational assistance as a landmark. From here, sailors would note that their voyages had begun to turn east as they sailed from west to the Far East. Visitors will have the opportunity to take an optional hike to the summit of the Cape of Good Hope and take a photo with perhaps the most famous sign in the country, which reads “Welcome to the Cape of Good Hope!” and includes the Cape of Good Hope’s coordinates.
- Old Cape Point Lighthouse - From the Cape of Good Hope, the tour proceeds to Cape Point, where a paved path from the Cape Point car park leads just over 300m to the third oldest lighthouse in the country, offering great views and photography opportunities. Launched in 1860, the Cape Point Lighthouse was decommissioned in 1919 when it was discovered that sailors couldn’t see it in cloudy conditions, leading to the construction of a new lighthouse at a lower elevation. A funicular is available at an additional cost for those who prefer not to walk.
- Boulders Beach Penguin Colony - Boulders Beach is one of Africa’s only three mainland penguin colonies. Passing by without visiting this famous penguin colony would be a missed opportunity! Here, visitors can walk on the boardwalk and see the endangered African penguin up close.
- Simon’s Town - Simon’s Town was named after a Cape Dutch governor of the 17th century who found this town to be a lee-shore in winter. The Victorian-built town is home to some of the freshest seafood and fish restaurants in Cape Town. It is also the home of the South African Navy.
- Kalk Bay - Kalk Bay was voted one of the 12 coolest places in the world to live! This is South Africa’s oldest holiday resort and has a Eurocentric outlook. Some of the best restaurants in Cape Town are located here. Art galleries, cafes, Cuban cigar bars, and small shops dominate the main street. Residents of this quaint town also enjoy seeing Southern Right whales from the comfort of their living rooms!
- Muizenberg Beach - Muizenberg Beach is a well-known surfing beach. The famous colorful changing huts on the beach also make for great photo opportunities. Provided there is time and traffic flow is reasonable, there will be a final photo stop here before the journey continues to Cape Town for the conclusion. Please note that the stop at Muizenberg Beach is subject to time and normal traffic flow.
