• Robben Island Museum - The tour begins with a ferry ride across the bay to Robben Island, weather permitting. From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island was a site of banishment, isolation, and imprisonment. Today, it stands as a World Heritage Site and museum, serving as a poignant reminder of the cost of freedom. The excursion includes a round-trip ferry to the island, a bus tour on the island, and a visit to the prison.
• Bo-kaap - Upon returning to the mainland, enjoy a drive through Bo-Kaap to explore how the Malay slaves influenced the culture, cuisine, and aesthetics of this beautiful city and its people. In the heart of the city, take a short walk through the Company Gardens. From squirrels to diverse plant life, it’s a delightful place to soak up some ‘Cape Town vibes’ and enjoy the aviaries and fishponds. At the Wale Street end of the garden, you will find a monument commemorating the life and work of Desmond Tutu, affectionately known by South Africans as “The Arch,” and a tribute to the values of the South African Constitution. The Arch for Arch was installed beside the historic St. George’s Cathedral, also known as the “People’s Cathedral” for its role in the resistance against apartheid. Visit the Slave Lodge, which delves into the history of these unwilling immigrants and their contributions to the richness and diversity of South African history.
• Table Mountain - Continue to Table Mountain, where you will ascend to the top by cable car, weather permitting (cable car fee not included). Enjoy the panoramic views over the city, with Robben Island resting in Table Bay. Also, get a bird’s eye view over the Atlantic Seaboard.
• Iziko Slave Lodge - Visit the Slave Lodge, which explores the history of these unwilling immigrants and their contributions to the richness and diversity of South African history. As you drive through the city, you will experience its cultural melting pot.
• Castle of Good Hope - Continue the tour with a visit to the Castle of Good Hope, the oldest building in South Africa. The Castle served as the local headquarters for the South African Army in the Western Cape and today houses the Castle Military Museum and ceremonial facilities for the traditional Cape Regiments. Alternatively, stop at Truth Café for a coffee at this ‘steampunk inspired’ artisan coffee shop, serving hand-roasted coffees in a vintage cast-iron drum (refreshments at own expense).
