This renowned peak offers the most gratifying sunrise hikes in the area. The adventure starts in the early morning hours, necessitating the use of headlamps. The initial part of the trail is straightforward, though it can be steep and gravelly in sections. The first light of dawn appears about 30 minutes before sunrise. By then, hikers will have completed a full circuit around Lion’s Head and reached the halfway mark where the path splits towards the summit. The last 30 minutes involve navigating a rugged, narrow, steep ridge with rocky parts that require the use of hands and fixed ladders. As the sun rises, it casts a warm orange glow over Table Mountain and the surrounding scenery. At 669 meters above sea level, the summit of Lion’s Head offers hikers stunning 360-degree views. In full daylight, the ascent path becomes clear, showcasing impressive Cape granite and sandstone formations, along with the distinctive indigenous flora known as Cape fynbos. The descent follows the same path and takes at least 60 minutes to complete.
