- Groot Drakenstein Prison - Formerly known as Victor Verster, this prison housed the late Nelson Mandela for the final 14 months of his political imprisonment. Mandela described it as a ‘gilded cage,’ where his time was a blend of luxury and confinement. Instead of a cell, Mandela was provided with a comfortable villa, featuring multiple bedrooms, a swimming pool, a personal chef, and a stunning view of the Drakenstein Mountains. This was his last place of imprisonment before gaining freedom in February 1990. The Sexwhale Family Foundation commissioned a “Long Walk to Freedom” statue in honor of Nelson Mandela.
