- Robben Island Museum - Located in Table Bay, Cape Town, Robben Island was named by the Dutch and later referred to as Seal Island by the British. Historically, it served as an animal quarantine station, a leper colony, and a place for isolating political prisoners. Remarkably, three former inmates, Nelson Mandela, Kgalema Motlanthe, and Jacob Zuma, have become Presidents of South Africa. In 1999, Robben Island was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and now offers daily tours. These tours commence at the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront.
After being picked up from your Cape Town hotel, you will be transported to the V&A Waterfront to board the Robben Island Ferry. This ferry takes you to the renowned site where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years. Often referred to as “South Africa’s Alcatraz,” the island was a leper colony and a place of isolation, banishment, and imprisonment. It stands as a poignant reminder of the harsh conditions endured in the fight for freedom from apartheid. The tour, led by former prison warders or ex-prisoners, is both historical and educational. After the tour, you will return to the Waterfront by ferry.

Robben Island, designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, was the former prison of global statesman Nelson Mandela and two other political prisoners who later became South African Presidents. During the apartheid era, many political prisoners were held here, but today it welcomes over 306,912 visitors, according to the 2018/19 statistics.
Table Mountain was recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature on December 2, 2012. It is the only one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature located in a city, which explains why over 1,161,206 visitors admired this iconic landscape, as per the 2018/19 statistics.
