- Robben Island Museum - The guide will lead the group to the Robben Island Port, where a ferry will transport everyone to Robben Island. Once there, a former political prisoner will provide a tour, sharing inspiring stories from their past experiences. Visitors will also have the opportunity to enter the prison cell where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in incarceration. In 1961, the island resumed its function as a prison. During apartheid, many Black individuals were held on Robben Island as political prisoners, including former President Nelson Mandela. The prison gained international notoriety for its severe conditions, and upon the release of apartheid’s political prisoners, Robben Island became a symbol of the resilience of the human spirit.
Robben Island was designated a World Heritage Site because its buildings serve as a reminder of its somber history, while also representing the power of the human spirit, freedom, and the triumph of democracy over oppression.

Along the way, you will pass by buildings and a high wall constructed by prisoners in the 1960s. These buildings were used for family and lawyer visits to the prisoners.
Once you have boarded the buses, you will be introduced to your Tour Guide. The prison tour will be led by a Robben Island Tour Guide as part of our integrated tour model. These guides are well-versed and knowledgeable about the Island’s rich 500-year history. The tour includes stops at the graveyard of leprosy victims, the Lime Quarry, Robert Sobukwe’s house, the Bluestone Quarry, the army and navy bunkers, and the Maximum Security Prison where many of South Africa’s freedom fighters were held for years. The tour concludes with a visit to Nelson Mandela’s cell.
