209 Tafelberg Rd - Hiking up Table Mountain via Kloof Corner Ridge is not recommended for those with a fear of heights. The trail features steep rock-scrambling sections and three sets of chains, each about 7-10 meters high.
The route follows an exhilarating line up a classic ridge, offering breathtaking views of Lion’s Head, Cape Town, Camps Bay, and the Twelve Apostles. It starts with gentle, sweeping zigzags until reaching the Contour Path. Turn left along the Contour Path to find a chain hanging down a rock step. This is the first 6 to 7-meter ascent to reach the ledge. From here, follow several cairns into a gully and along the ledge to a long chimney-crack where the second chain hangs down a narrow crevice, requiring some upper body strength.
Shortly after this climb, there is a square buttress. Step up to a ledge and continue to a corner leading to an 11-inch chimney where the third and final chain is located. This crack divides the rock mass, running through the ridge. Navigating this passage involves standing on rocks wedged into the crack and propelling oneself up and out of the chimney. From here, the main path to the Table Mountain plateau is reached.

Visiting Cape Town wouldn’t be complete without experiencing the awe-inspiring Table Mountain, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. Kloof Corner Ridge is a standout feature, offering breathtaking views to the north over the city and to the west over Camps Bay and the Atlantic coast at various points along the trail. This is arguably the most demanding hike on Table Mountain, as it requires rock scrambling over three ascents using a chain, including a unique 11-inch rock chimney, and follows the narrow ridge on the right side of Table Mountain with some thrilling exposure. This challenging, unmarked hike provides the chance to explore some of the less-traveled paths on Table Mountain and avoid the more crowded areas.
