Bo-Kaap - We visit the historic Bo Kaap also known as the Malay Quarter where freed slaves settled after the abolishment of slavery in 1834. These brightly painted houses are one of the most photographed areas in Cape Town. In the 1700s, political exiles, slaves and convicts were sent to the Cape by the Dutch from Sri Lanka, Malaysia and the Indonesian Archipelago. Although not technically correct, these individuals and their descendants became known as Cape Malays. Many of them eventually settled in the Bo Kaap. The Bo-Kaap is a unique part of old Cape Town. It is situated above the central business district of the City. It is a small residential area, less than two kilometres in length and less than half a kilometre at its widest point. Most of the Bo-Kaap was built between 1760 and 1840. It is comprised of four areas: the Malay Quarter, Stadzicht, Schotsche Kloof and Schoone Kloof. The precise boundaries of each area are unclear.
