- Spiaggia Santa Maria - The beautiful Bay of Santa Maria hosts the only fishing village in the Capo Vaticano region. Traditionally, it is divided into three areas: Scoglio Fortino, Santa Maria, and Petrario. At the heart of the bay, a small church stands in a square surrounded by quaint fishermen’s homes.
Our tour will both begin and conclude here.
- Grotticelle Beach - The expansive and rugged Grotticelle Bay, segmented into a series of inlets and small coves, ends at the Scoglio del Palombaro, the farthest point of Capo Vaticano.
We will pause here for approximately 30 minutes, offering the chance to snorkel among various fish species.
- Capo Vaticano - Capo Vaticano is renowned for its lighthouse, which has guided sailors safely since ancient times. Adjacent to Grotticelle Bay, its stunning beaches are globally recognized as some of the most beautiful. A Belvedere at the summit is highly recommended for guests to visit, offering breathtaking views.
- Praia di Fuoco - Praia i Focu, situated at the base of the Cape beneath the Lighthouse, ranks among the world’s top 100 most beautiful beaches and is one of Italy’s top 10. It is accessible to the public only by sea, while a private staircase connects it to the lighthouse and the home of writer Berto, who, captivated by this magnificent location in the 1960s, chose it as his residence.
- Formicoli Beach - Formicoli, named after Forum Hercules, an ancient trading port founded by Hercules as noted by some Latin historians. Today, snorkeling here reveals a variety of fish species.
- Spiaggia di Riaci - The captivating Riaci Bay, with its azure and clear waters, is named after the stream that flows there, Riace, which means “impetuous torrent” in Greek. A layered rocky wall rises above the sea. The long white sandy beach is divided by a small promontory extending into the sea: the Scoglio di Riaci, featuring caves and inlets to explore by swimming.
- Grotta dello Scheletro - The Grotta dello Scheletro, also known as the Blue Grotto, is named for the sunlight reflecting on the white sand, creating a play of colors that form skeletal shapes inside the cave. The beach is called Pietre di Mulino because, as you will observe, millstones were once extracted from the numerous round hollows in the rock.
We will make another stop here for a swim, with opportunities to snorkel among fish, sea urchins, and starfish, and swim inside the cave.
- Tropea Beach - TROPEA - RUPE
Our excursion concludes at the base of this 50-meter-high cliff overlooking the sea, where Tropea, a town of 6,200 residents, is perched. It serves as a true balcony over the sea, with an elegant center. Today, Tropea attracts thousands of tourists from around the globe, drawn by its natural beauty, landscapes, art, and culinary delights.
- Santuario di Santa Maria dell’Isola di Tropea - TROPEA - ISLAND
Opposite Tropea’s cliff stands a large sandstone rock, once entirely surrounded by the sea, on which the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola is situated.
The large cave that traverses the rock, known as the Cave of Lovers, is of great interest.
The Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola rises on the namesake rock.
It is believed that the island’s rock was inhabited by hermits around the 7th-8th century, who, isolating themselves from the civilized world, led a contemplative and ascetic life. The staircase leading to it was constructed around 1810.
Having become one of Calabria’s iconic sites globally, this church has medieval origins.
Here, our tour will conclude. We will return to Capo Vaticano for a final stop with a swim.
Navigation time: 15 minutes.
