Arrival and First Impressions

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as I made my way to the Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort, the starting point for my surf lesson in San Juan. The salty breeze carried the promise of a perfect day on the water, and I couldn’t help but feel a familiar thrill of anticipation. As a seasoned surfer, I’ve chased waves across Central America, but there’s always something special about trying a new spot.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by the sight of eager learners and seasoned instructors, all buzzing with excitement. Heri, our instructor for the day, was running on island time, which gave me a moment to soak in the vibrant atmosphere. The communication was seamless, and soon enough, Heri arrived with a warm smile and a laid-back demeanor that instantly put everyone at ease.

Learning the Basics

We started with a quick beachside lesson on the fundamentals of surfing. Heri’s approach was both professional and relaxed, perfectly suited to the diverse group of learners. He demonstrated the art of popping up on the board, a crucial skill for any surfer, and offered personalized tips to each participant. The waves were a bit rough due to an incoming storm, but Heri’s expertise shone through as he guided us to a calmer section of the beach.

Watching the kids in the group, I was reminded of my own early days on the board. The older boy was a natural, catching waves with ease, while the younger one needed a bit more guidance. Heri was patient and attentive, ensuring everyone felt supported and safe. The joy on their faces was infectious, and I couldn’t help but smile as I watched them ride the waves.

Riding the Waves

With the basics covered, it was time to hit the water. The ocean was alive with energy, and I felt a familiar rush as I paddled out. The storm added an element of challenge, but it only heightened the experience. There’s something exhilarating about surfing in less-than-perfect conditions, a reminder of the ocean’s power and unpredictability.

We had about an hour with Heri, who continued to offer guidance and encouragement. The kids were having the time of their lives, and even as the storm intensified, their spirits remained high. Unfortunately, the weather cut our session short, but the team was incredibly accommodating, offering a partial refund and the chance to return the next day.

As I left the beach, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction. The lesson had been a reminder of why I fell in love with surfing in the first place—the thrill of the ride, the camaraderie among surfers, and the ever-present connection to the ocean.
