These rare and “beautiful birds” are deeply mourned by many when lost, as they bring a refreshing uniqueness to the world. They are creatures that nourish the souls of others. The brother feels his loss profoundly when Doodle dies, weeping as he holds him, “sheltering [his] fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain.”

“The Scarlet Ibis” is a short story by novelist James Hurst. It was first published in The Atlantic Monthly in July 1960 and received the “Atlantic First” award. The story has become a classic in American literature and is frequently included in high school anthologies and other collections.
