- Algar Seco - Located near Carvoeiro’s old town, Algar Seco is a hidden gem featuring a naturally carved pool that opens to the Atlantic. It also offers a thrilling jumping area from the sandstone cliffs into the ocean, with steps carved into the rocks for easy return to land. While exploring, observant visitors can spot fossil shells embedded in the cliff walls. This natural wonder has been sculpted over centuries by wind, rain, and waves, offering breathtaking views.
- A Boneca - Adjacent to Algar Seco, “A Boneca” is a short tunnel carved into the cliff that opens into a small room with two windows overlooking the ocean. This renowned rock formation, known as “The Doll,” resembles an inverted cone and looks like a doll from the sea, with the windows resembling eyes. The view from this cave is truly spectacular, highlighting why Algar Seco is one of Portugal’s most beautiful areas.
- Carvoeiro Boardwalk - The Carvoeiro boardwalk is a delightful cliff-top walk leading to the Nossa Senhora da Encarnação fort. This brief ten-minute walk follows an elevated wooden path along the cliff tops, offering stunning views of the coastline. Informative signs along the way describe the local fauna and flora.
- Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Encarnacao - The boardwalk concludes at the fort’s main entrance, where the chapel is located atop a hill overlooking Carvoeiro beach. This space served both religious and military purposes. The church existed before the defensive military structure was built in 1675, possibly on the site of a former watchtower.
- Carvoeiro - From the fort, the descent begins, pausing at a viewpoint that overlooks the beach and old town. Here, visitors can admire typical Algarve architecture and capture photos.
Next, visitors reach the old town, where they have 30 minutes to explore independently, visit the beach, and shop for souvenirs.
Lunch follows at a traditional Portuguese restaurant near the old town.
- Silves - A quick stop at a viewpoint offers views of the Arade River, farms, the city, and the majestic castle atop the hill, perfect for photos. Visitors receive a brief history of Silves Castle before heading to the old town to visit the castle.
- Castelo de Silves - Perched on a hill, the impressive Silves Castle has Roman origins, but the Arabs constructed the magnificent structure seen today between the 8th and 13th centuries. Visitors can enter the castle and walk along the patrol route atop the castle walls.
Inside the castle, remnants from the Muslim occupation period can be explored, including a silo for storing cereals and a cistern covered by a vault supported by five semi-circular arches.
Silves Castle is the finest example of Arab military architecture in Portugal.
- Silves Cathedral - Construction of Silves Cathedral began in 1266 on the site of a former mosque. The cathedral features Gothic architecture, with the high altar rebuilt in Manueline style after the 1755 earthquake. Visitors can walk by the cathedral and take photos.
