Royal Palace of Fez - This is the royal palace of the King of Morocco, located in Fez. Its origins trace back to the founding of Fes el-Jdid (New Fez), the royal citadel of the Marinid dynasty, in 1276 CE. Most of the current palace dates from the Alaouite era (17th-20th centuries). The expansive grounds include various private buildings, patios, and gardens, and historically housed administrative offices and government tribunals. Today, the most visible parts of the palace are its main entrances at the Old Mechouar (northeast) and the ornate 20th-century gates at Place des Alaouites, near the Mellah (southwest).
Borj Nord - This northern tower is a fort in Fez, Morocco, established in 1582 by the Saadi dynasty, inspired by Portuguese forts of the 16th century. It is one of the largest defensive structures around Fez and among the few to incorporate European-style military architecture from the gunpowder era. Today, it serves as the Museum of Arms and is open to the public.
Kairaouine Mosque (Mosque of al-Qarawiyyin) - Also known as Quaraouiyine, this university was founded as a mosque by Fatima al-Fihri between 857–859 and became a leading spiritual and educational center during the Islamic Golden Age. It was integrated into Morocco’s modern state university system in 1963 and officially renamed “University of Al Quaraouiyine” two years later. The mosque itself is a significant example of historical Moroccan and Islamic architecture, featuring elements from various periods of Moroccan history.
Bou Inania Medersa - Built between 1350–55 CE by Abu Inan Faris, the Madrasa Bou Inania is the only madrasa in Morocco that also served as a congregational mosque. It is celebrated as a pinnacle of Marinid architecture and historic Moroccan architecture in general.
Fes el-Bali - Enjoy an almost full-day sightseeing tour with a guide to explore Fez Medina, once considered the Mecca of the West and the Athens of Africa. It is the country’s second-largest city after Casablanca, with a population of about 1 million. This former capital is one of Morocco’s four imperial cities, comprising three distinct parts: Fez el Bali, the oldest section surrounded by a large wall with over 9000 narrow streets and alleys; Fez-Jdid or New Fes, home to the Mellah, the Jewish quarter; and Ville Nouvelle, the newest section created during the French occupation. Fez el Bali is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the largest medina in the world. Within its narrow streets lies the oldest university in the world, The University of Al-Karaouine, founded in AD 859, which is still operational today.
Chouara Tannery - Chouara Tannery, sometimes spelled Chouwara, is one of three tanneries in the city and the largest and oldest. Located in the oldest medina quarter near the Saffarin Madrasa along the Oued Fes, the tanning industry has operated here in the same manner since the city’s inception. Today, it is a major tourist attraction, with round stone vessels filled with dye or white liquids for softening hides. The leather goods produced are exported worldwide.
