DAY 3: FES – AZROU – MIDELT – ERRACHIDIA – MERZOUGA
Merzouga - On the third day, after breakfast, the journey from Fes begins towards Ifrane, often called “the Switzerland of Morocco.” This trip offers views of the Middle Atlas and Higher Atlas mountains. A stop at Azrou, a Berber village nestled in Morocco’s largest cedar forest, may provide a chance to see Barbarian apes. The journey continues through the Tizi Ntalghamt pass to Midelt, along the stunning Ziz Gorges carved through volcanic rock, and through the lush Ziz Valley, with stops for panoramic views. The route passes through welcoming Berber villages to Erfoud and Rissani, before reaching Merzouga. Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a glass of mint tea before checking into their Riad.
DAY 4: MERZOUGA AREA – THE CAMEL TREK AND OVERNIGHT IN THE CAMP
Merzouga - After a delightful breakfast in the Riad, the exploration of the area begins. A visit to the Gnawa people in their village Khamlia offers insights into Gnawa music and lifestyle. Nearby, the lake of Merzouga, home to various bird species including flamingos, is a must-see. The journey continues to the historic city of Rissani, the foundation of the Alaouite dynasty, Morocco’s current ruling royal family. Rissani is surrounded by 360 ksar (fortified villages with many towers) and hosts a large souk (open market) three times a week. Once known as Sijilmassa, it was a hub for salt caravans from Timbuktu, Mali. Visitors can stroll through the souk, filled with spices, vegetables, and fabrics, before returning to Merzouga, where camels await. Guided by an experienced camel handler, guests will explore the sand sea of Merzouga.
DAY 5: MERZOUGA – TODRA GORGES – DADES GORGES
Dades Gorges - An early morning wake-up call from the camel handler ensures guests witness a potentially unforgettable sunrise. After breakfast in a nomad tent, a peaceful camel trek back to Merzouga village follows. Along the way, the unique beauty of the Erg Chebbi dunes, changing with the light, is truly captivating. After breakfast in the Riad, the journey continues to Rissani, Tinghir, and Todra Gorges, the highest and narrowest gorges in Morocco. Following lunch in the gorge’s heart, the drive proceeds through the Dades Valley, showcasing majestic sand castles and the remarkable rock formations known as “monkey toes.” Overnight accommodation is provided in a Hotel/Riad.
DAY 6: DADES GORGE – OUARZAZATE – MARRAKECH
Marrakech - After breakfast, the drive through the Dades Valley towards Kalaat Mgouna and Ouarzazate begins. The route, known as the way of the thousand Kasbahs, offers numerous opportunities for capturing stunning photographs. A stop at Kalaat Mgouna, “the rose city,” allows for the purchase of rosewater, ensuring linens smell delightful long after the trip. The journey continues to Marrakech via Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, the largest Kasbah in Morocco, built by Et Hami El Glaoui, one of the last Berber chieftains in the 18th century, now home to many Glaoui people. The trip proceeds through the majestic Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2260m) over the High Atlas Mountains, culminating at the accommodation in Marrakech.
