• Castel Gandolfo - Castel Gandolfo’s origins trace back to the magnificent Roman villa of Albanum Domitian, constructed by Emperor Domitian between 81 and 96 AD. The town was largely forgotten until the 1200s when the Genoese Gandolfo family erected a castle atop the hill overlooking the lake. Although the papal influence was established in the mid-16th century, the Papal Residence was redesigned by Carlo Maderno for Pope Urban VIII in the 17th century. Later, Pius XI expanded it by adding the Papal Palace and the adjacent Villa Barberini. In 1870, the small square in front of the Residence was renamed Liberty Square during the Italian unification movement. The Papal Palace remained unoccupied from 1870 until 1929, when Mussolini, through the Lateran Treaty, acknowledged the Holy See as its rightful owner.
