• La Fortezza di Mont’Alfonso - The Mont’Alfonso Fortress is a remarkable monument in the Serchio Valley. Positioned just above Castelnuovo Garfagnana, it is a short distance from the town center and spans approximately 60,000 square meters, providing stunning views of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and the Panie group in the Apuan Alps. Constructed between 1579 and 1586 by the order of Alfonso II d’Este, following a design by Marc’Antonio Pasi, it was intended to protect Castelnuovo and the Este territory from the Republic of Lucca. The Garfagnana community also contributed significantly to its construction with a notable sum of 30,000 scudi. A local legend suggests that the fortress was connected by an underground tunnel to the Rocca Ariostesca, serving as a secret escape route during sieges. Today, visitors can reach the center of Castelnuovo on foot via the Ariosto Path, a scenic and romantic walk that is highly appreciated by tourists.
