- Mt Cheeseman Ski Area - This engaging two-day alpine course is tailored for beginners and aspiring mountaineers eager to establish a strong foundation in alpine travel and safety. Located in the breathtaking Craigieburn Range near Arthur’s Pass, the course emphasizes the development of essential skills for safe mountain travel in New Zealand’s alpine environment.
Day 1 introduces participants to fundamental alpine equipment and techniques, such as ice axe usage, crampon walking methods, self-arrest skills, and basic movement on snow-covered terrain. After a day of practical learning at Mt Cheeseman, the group will head to a lodge in Arthur’s Pass for a session on alpine trip planning, covering route selection, interpreting guidebooks and maps, and understanding New Zealand’s mountain grading system.
Day 2 allows participants to apply their newly acquired skills with a guided attempt to reach a peak or high point in the Craigieburn Range. The day includes lessons in safe travel, avalanche avoidance, and emergency shelter techniques, offering a real-world context for alpine decision-making.

On the second day, participants test their newfound skills with a guided climb towards a local peak or high point—an unforgettable chance to practice alpine travel, avalanche avoidance, and emergency preparedness in a true mountain environment.
NZ-Focused Instruction:
Participants gain insights specific to New Zealand’s alpine environment, learning to interpret local guidebooks and maps, assess routes, and understand the unique grading system used in NZ mountaineering.
