Into the Heart of Araucanía

The moment I set foot in the Cautín Province, I felt an immediate connection to the land. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and earth, and the towering peaks of the Villarrica National Park loomed in the distance, promising adventure. As a biologist and environmental activist, I have always been drawn to places where nature reigns supreme, and the Los Nevados Excursion was no exception.

Our journey began with a gentle trek through the forest of lengas and ñirres, trees that seemed to whisper secrets of the ancient land. The guides, knowledgeable and passionate, shared insights into the unique geology and diverse flora and fauna of the region. I was particularly fascinated by the woodpeckers, their rhythmic drumming echoing through the trees, a reminder of the vibrant life that thrives in these woods.

As we walked, the forest opened up to reveal the majestic Araucarias, their distinctive silhouettes standing tall against the sky. These trees, often referred to as living fossils, are a testament to the resilience of nature, surviving for millions of years. It was a humbling experience, reminding me of the importance of conservation and the role we play in preserving these natural wonders for future generations.

A View from the Sillón Hill

After a two and a half hour walk, we reached the “sillón” hill, a viewpoint that offered a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the Araucanian landscape. The sight was nothing short of spectacular. From this vantage point, the Villarrica Volcano and its neighboring peaks stood proudly, their snow-capped summits glistening in the sunlight.

I took a moment to sit and reflect, allowing the beauty of the scene to wash over me. The guides led us in a brief meditation, encouraging us to connect with the essence of the forest. It was a moment of peace and clarity, a chance to truly appreciate the interconnectedness of all living things.

As I gazed out over the landscape, I couldn’t help but think of my children and the world they will inherit. It is experiences like these that fuel my passion for environmental advocacy, driving me to protect these precious ecosystems.
