First Mountaineering Experience - This was one of the hardest mental battles I have ever faced. Gabriel was the best Guide I could of asked for, keeping us at a solid rhythm in the most difficult part of the climb. Truly a once in a life time opportunity, because not everyone has the determination to do something like this.
We went on the last day available before rain came and closed down shop for a bit, and Richard assured me that the likely hood we would reach the top was high, but there would be severely strong winds, which could be dangerous. I chose to pay and take my chances, since I only had 2 days left in pucón.
The morning of the ascent, we arrived at the base of the Volcano, with low winds and clear sky’s. It was looking like conditions were as best as they could be. We began the hike and, since It was just Gabriel and me, we joined a fellow group to push towards the top with all day. They provided lots of insight onto the other volcanoes that were visible throughout the climb, and overall provided a light environment, keeping our spirits high while pushing forward at a great pace.
When we reached the most difficult aspect of the climb, probably the last 1 1/2 hrs of the climb, this is when it got serious. This was a continuous winding path of other climbers footprints through the snow, and the most open face of the volcano. It felt never ending, and the higher you went the steeper it got. As well as temperatures began dropping, and the wind seriously starting picking up. After what felt like an eternity, we finally made it to the section right beneath the peak, the last 15 minute stretch. The wind was pushing at 80kph, and it felt like every step was seriously going to take me away. However, Gabriel’s composure kept us pushing at a steady pace, eventually breaking the ridge and seeing the crater at the top.
The feeling of success was overwhelming, even with my hands and face numb from the wind pounding on us. I was ecstatic, I did it.
I even took one of my gloves off to try to take a video to just let out my joy, and the wind decided to rob my glove (it now resides in argentina somewhere)
The excitement was overwhelming that both Gabriel and I were not phased at all, just stoked to have finally made it. After the whole group got to the top, we took a picture and then started the perilous climb down, where it truly felt like the wind got even stronger, making every step and decision crucial.
Nevertheless, we made it down it one piece and got to ride these tiny sleds and majority of the way back down the mountain, which has to be some of the most extreme sledding i’ve ever done in my life. And they were super chill about the glove! Gave me a beer as a congratulations instead
You will not regret anything from booking with the agency, and I dare you to challenge yourself for something in its own level.
