A Journey Through Time: The Enchanting Landscapes of Transylvania

As a former professor of European history, I have always been drawn to the stories and architecture that define the continent’s past. My recent journey through Transylvania, guided by the knowledgeable Gelu, was a remarkable experience that brought history to life in unexpected ways. The 7-Day Cultural Tour through Maramures and Saxon Transylvania offered a unique glimpse into a world where time seems to stand still.

Our adventure began in the bustling city of Bucharest, where we were greeted by Gelu and his driver, George. The drive through the Olt River Valley to Cozia Monastery set the tone for the days to come. Founded in 1388 by Mircea the Elder, the monastery is a testament to the region’s rich history, with its intricate frescoes and serene surroundings. As we continued to Sibiu, the medieval charm of the city captivated us. Climbing the Council Tower, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the Grand Square and the surrounding architecture, each building telling its own story of the past.

Cluj-Napoca, with its vibrant streets and historical landmarks, offered a glimpse into the life of Matthias Rex, one of Hungary’s greatest kings. Gelu’s insights into the region’s history, particularly during the Soviet era, added depth to our understanding of the cultural and political shifts that have shaped modern Romania. His personal anecdotes and historical knowledge made each stop along the way a lesson in resilience and transformation.

The wooden churches of Surdesti and Desesti, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, are masterpieces of craftsmanship, their spires reaching towards the heavens.
