The White Towns of Andalusia are a collection of charming towns in southern Spain, primarily located within the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. These villages are renowned for their whitewashed walls and red or brown tiled roofs.
It is believed that the whitewashing of these villages helps to combat the intense summer heat, particularly affecting towns along the Sierra de Grazalema. However, maintaining whitewashed houses is an ancient Mediterranean tradition, originally used to disinfect environments during plague epidemics.
When lime is mixed with water, it generates high heat, effectively killing microorganisms. Consequently, residents of “whitewashed” towns historically experienced fewer diseases compared to those who did not.
Although times have changed, the tradition endures, with the practice of painting facades (“whitewashing”) still prevalent. In some pueblos blancos, homeowners can even paint their exteriors without incurring taxes.
