Katavothres - The sinks of Argostoli are often regarded as another “mystery” by many in Kefalonia. At the edge of the Argostoli Peninsula, the sea enters the land and flows into sinkholes. This phenomenon has puzzled scientists for a long time. In 1963, geologists Viktor Maurin and Josef Zötl from the University of Graz poured 160 kilograms of paint into one of the sinks. Two weeks later, traces of the color appeared in springs on the opposite side of the island, 14 km away, as well as in the Melissani lake cave. The sinks are essentially karstic gaps through which river waters flowing into the polga are drained. Interestingly, the sinks of Argostoli form a system of crevices located below sea level, constantly receiving seawater with force, creating a coastal abyss with a continuous inflow of seawater. Many scientists suggest that fresh water descends underground from Ainos, with an estimated 1,000 cubic meters lost every 24 hours.

Kourkoumelata - Kourkoumelata is one of the most beautiful, elegant, picturesque, and impressive villages in Kefalonia. A unique feature of the village is the diverse architectural plans of the houses, which are not aligned with the road but adhere to excellent road planning principles. Despite the beauty and elegance of the buildings, in Kourkoumelata, the leading role is played not so much by the buildings as by the colorful gardens, which are an integral part of the area and are meticulously maintained by the villagers. Even the communal areas are impressive, with the lawn taking pride of place and giant palm trees dominating the main square.

St George’s Castle - The Castle of Agios Georgios is perched on a hill 7 km from Argostoli, overlooking the southern part of Kefalonia and the bay of Argostoli. The castle’s construction began during the Frankish occupation but was expanded and gained strategic importance during the Venetian occupation. For many years, it served as the administrative center of Kefalonia until the capital moved to Argostoli in the 18th century. Despite the damage from earthquakes and the passage of time, the castle of Agios Georgios remains impressive today, as a classic example of Venetian fortification art.
