Roosting sites include primary and secondary forests, graveyards, and mangroves. The Pemba flying fox is highly social and was once found in large colonies. This species is exclusive to Pemba Island, Tanzania. Originally, the island was covered in forest, but now only fragments of the primary forest remain. Recent estimates of the Pemba flying fox population have varied significantly. In 1989, studies indicated a severe population decline, with fewer than 10 individuals observed, suggesting the species was nearing extinction. However, surveys in 1992 estimated the population to be between 2,400 and 3,600, although it was believed that the population had decreased considerably in the previous decade.
- Pemba Island - The Pemba flying fox is not typically found near human settlements unless there are large fruiting trees. It is the only bat species endemic to an African country. Flying foxes are named for their fox-like faces and do not use echolocation. Instead, they rely on vision and normal hearing for navigation.
Most flying foxes consume fruit and are also known as fruit bats. These bats play a crucial ecological and economic role by pollinating and dispersing seeds of both wild and commercial plants. Pemba Island hosts four species of Old World fruit bats (Megachiroptera). However, many villagers are unaware of the presence of more than one bat species on the island, which could lead to confusion when assessing the status of the Pemba flying fox.

Pemba’s only endemic mammal is a large and critically endangered bat (Pteropus voeltzkowi) known as “popo” in Swahili. Unlike other bats, they roost in trees during the day. The island’s largest roosting site, housing around 4000 bats, is located at Kidike Sanctuary, approximately 10km northeast of Chake Chake. This significant population thrives due to the nearby burial site, which has kept the colony undisturbed. Outside of peak season, it’s advisable to call ahead to ensure someone is available. Kidike is situated 3.5km off the Chake–Wete road.
