• Chateau de Chambord - Originating from the Middle Ages, Chambord was transformed into a classic Renaissance masterpiece by King François I. Built on the base of a fortified château with gothic decorations, its layout resembles a Greek cross. Chambord hosted Charles Quint in 1539 and was later fortified by Charles IX in 1566.
• Chateau de Chenonceau - Chateau de Chenonceau is the most visited and photographed château in the Loire Valley, France. Known as ‘the ladies château,’ it has been significantly influenced by women throughout its history. The “Château of Ladies” refers to the various female owners who shaped its legacy. Diane de Poitiers, in collaboration with architect Philippe Delorme, redesigned the castle, adding an arched bridge over the Cher River and gardens named after her. After Henri II’s death, Catherine de Medici took over and made several enhancements to the château and gardens. Louise de Lorraine, Madame de la Pelouze, and Laure Menier were key figures in the renovations and reorganization at Chenonceau.
• Chateau Royal d’Amboise - The Château d’Amboise, with its prominent Renaissance style, stands out in the Loire Valley, France. Its elevated position above the Loire River makes it visible from afar as you approach the town along the riverbank. The Lords of Amboise established their residence in the château during the 12th century, thereby asserting control over the area.
• Chateau de Cheverny - Once a residence, the Cheverny château was expanded during François I’s reign with support from Jean Hurault. In the 1630s, the structure was nearly entirely demolished. Henri Hurault initiated the construction of a new château, employing renowned artisans like Jean Mosnier for interior paintings and Gilles Guérin for French-style garden sculptures. Guérin later contributed to the decorative elements at Versailles. Cheverny inspired Belgian cartoonist Hergé to create the Château de Moulinsart in the famous Adventures of Tintin and Milou.
• Le Chateau du Clos Luce - Parc Leonardo da Vinci - Built in 1500, Clos Lucé is where Leonardo da Vinci resided from 1516 to 1519, invited by King François I at the age of 64. Among his belongings was a painting gifted to the King… the Mona Lisa. Clos Lucé is also where da Vinci passed away on May 2, 1519.
• Chateau de Villandry - Villandry was constructed by Jean le Breton, Minister of Finances under François I, and completed in 1536, with some interior and courtyard work finished in the 18th century. The château features a feudal dungeon from the 12th century alongside a Renaissance château.
• Azay-le-Rideau - Situated on an island in the river Indre, Chateau Azay-le-Rideau is one of the most beautiful and frequently visited châteaux in the Loire Valley. Built during François I’s reign in the Renaissance style by Gilles Berthelot, it stands on the site of a former small fortified castle. Its turreted façade reflects in the river’s still waters, creating a timeless scene.
