Discover one of the most sacred temples, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (Doi Suthep temple), perched on a mountain offering breathtaking views of Chiang Mai. Founded in 1383 during King Keu Naone’s reign, the temple has a mystical origin story. A visiting Sukhothai monk advised the Lanna king to build a temple using the twin of a miraculous Buddha relic. This relic was placed on a white elephant, which roamed the mountain until it passed away at the exact spot where the temple now stands, marking it as the “chosen location.” Visitors can reach the temple via a long, yet meditative, 306-step staircase. For those less inclined to climb, a tram is available to transport visitors to the temple.
