- Lighthouse of Chania - The Chania lighthouse, the oldest in the Mediterranean, was built in 1864 and stands as the main landmark of Chania. The 21-meter high tower, set on a stone base, is located at the end of the old harbor’s pier, opposite the Firkas fortress. Although visitors cannot enter, the lighthouse, originally constructed by the Venetians around 1600, was destroyed during the siege of Chania and later took its current minaret shape during the Egyptian occupation. It was restored in 1996.
- Etz Hayyim Synagogue - Entry fee is 3 euros per person. The Etz Hayyim Synagogue was established in the 17th century when Chania’s Jewish community acquired the Church of St. Catherine, a vacant 15th-century Venetian church. Severely damaged during World War II, the synagogue was abandoned after the Jewish community’s demise but reopened in 1999 with support from the World Monument Fund (WMF) and the Central Israeli Council of Greece. Today, it is the only active synagogue remaining on the island.
- Giali Tzamisi - At the old Venetian port of Chania, visitors are immediately drawn to the Mosque of Hasan Kucuk or Yali Tzamisi, one of the island’s first Turkish buildings. Built in honor of Küçük Hassan Pasha, Chania’s first Turkish military commander, the mosque’s name translates to “mosque of the sea.” Designed by an Armenian architect, this example of Islamic Renaissance architecture dates back to the late 17th century. It served as a Muslim place of worship until 1923. The cubic structure, topped by a large dome supported by four stone arches, features an arcade with seven small domes on the west and north sides. Only the base of the original minaret remains. Today, the building hosts cultural events and visual art exhibitions.
- Cathedral of Eisodion tis Theotokou - Visit Chania Cathedral to learn about its diverse cultural and religious traditions.
- Minoan Excavations - Chania, Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city, was home to the Minoan civilization, which thrived before 3000 BC and met a violent end in 1250 BC due to a devastating earthquake and tsunami. Many researchers believe the civilization was destroyed following the eruption of the Santorini volcano. At Kasteli Hill, ongoing archaeological excavations reveal the foundations of buildings, streets, and sewage systems. During the Minoan era, Chania was known as Kydonia.
- Municipal Market of Chania - Stroll through one of the Balkans’ oldest markets and explore its traditional shops.
